How 5 Minutes Changed my Art

I wrote this email to those on the newsletter of The Ugly Art Club. I thought it was a good thing to share with all of you here.

I started this 5 minute practice about 5 years ago.

It changed my art and my perspective of creating. See in order to properly tell the story we have to go back. See I also had this excuse that she didn't have time to create. I knew that in order to get better at my passion I needed to put in the work, however life is HARD. It was so easy for me to put my career (yes I work a full time job outside of her art) we had a mother and mother in law who were having health issues. I worked 50+ hours in retail leadership at the time and wow that's hardwork. You see where this is going…. how can you take time for yourself when the whole world seems to be falling apart.

Because this is your safe space… your ME time and we all damn well deserve it. So I set off on a commitment that I made to myself that I would show up everyday and if only for 5 minutes I would put in the work. I wasn't setting out to create a master piece, she was setting out to fuel her soul. This changed my world and this is what I realized. I was happier, I was a better wife, daughter and overall person. I couldn't believe what I could actually do in 5 minutes. Somedays the timer got me mid stroke other times I could slap it down and get something slapped together. What I realized is I was growing leaps and bounds in my work. I found “style” I also found what worked for me.

I am so passionate about other people working in the UGLY because I know all the hot-messes I made and never had a community that I felt okay to share with, because instagram doesn't view it as being art at all. I became passionate about creating a community of makers of all kinds that can share ALL their art, the good, the bad and celebrate making. This community is not just for mixed media peeps, it’s a community open and welcome TO ALL makers.

See as makers we need to MAKE! It fuels us just like a doughnut and coffee does. WE are made different and we need community to inspire, lift up and create with.
