4 Tips to help you with drawing

If you’d asked the younger me if she could draw? You would have gotten a “hell naw I CAN’T Draw.” Have you said this yourself? Well I am here to share with you some of the helpful things that you can put into your practice. So I have been trying to do more sketching for a few reasons. One is I travel for work often and it can be challenging to bring many supplies. I wanted to grow my skills in sketching and also wanted to keep up my art practice while I travel. So packing a zipper pouch with pen, pencil and charcoal is pretty easy to throw in the bag.

Also I have been taking a class by Lewis Rossignol called Sketchbookery. Highly recommend he really allows the pressure to be removed and has several fun ideas of things to add to your journal.

  • Use a reference image Black and White will allow you to see the variations easier. Reminder don’t draw what you think you see but what you actually are looking at. (you think you know what an eye looks like but each person has a different shape)

  • Breaking up the components into large easy shapes. (example below)

  • Practice and take pictures with your phone to view (you can see things differently when you are looking through the phone)

  • Read Draw on the Right Side of the Brain

  • Give yourself grace. Remember the first time will never be great keep showing up and practicing.

I am here to tell you that you can DRAW anything if you just practice and break it down to small simple shapes. Leave me a comment and let me know what you will sketch next.
