Exploring the Wabi Sabi of Art
I feel like I was just made out of the imperfect, to love the imperfect things in life. I was recently asked what image represents me at a work function and I shared a mosaic images or stitches and recycled fabrics. I am a vessel of imperfect lived experiences, worn and frayed along the edges. I have learned to show up as my authentic self, take it or leave it. I am me.
So how does that all transition into my art practice? The loose translation of “wabi” is simplicity and “sabi” means the beauty of age and wear. It is often termed as imperfect and incomplete. It is me and I am it, I am a lover of all the imperfect in life. This week I actually found myself mesmerized by a tree that has fallen in the outer edges of our property… it was decaying and had marks from years of wear. It is so beautiful and imperfect, the scars from the many storms it has seen. I can relate? Can you? Today’s art journal share, is me leaning into the raw organic feel of the marks and the beautiful rusty texture, torn worn and fragmented just like me.
I’d love to hear if you are inspired by the wabi sabi things of life. Please leave me a comment and enjoy the process video.
